To foster participation, commitment, growth, volunteerism, professional development and education of our members to further the goals and objectives of United Way of the Midlands by sustaining a leadership society that focuses on young professionals.
Community-oriented individuals ages 21-45 that give $1,000 or more to United Way may become members of the Young Leaders Society. This commitment may be made through the step-up program as described below.
The Young Leaders Society was recently formed to provide community involvement and personal development opportunities to its members. This unique group offers its members many ways to get involved with various United Way agencies, to make a difference in people's lives, and to become leaders in our Midlands community. Members will enjoy many exclusive opportunities throughout the year. Activities will include volunteer projects, networking and business opportunities and other special events. YLS programs will give members the opportunity to meet other like-minded civic and business leaders and become acquainted with Columbia's prominent philanthropists.
Once qualified to join, members do not have any requirements other than their philanthropic commitment. The program was designed to offer something different for all its members regardless of level of involvement or area of interest, and members can choose what activities are important to them. Members can sign up for multiple service projects, network at YLS business functions, or simply receive recognition as a Young Leader. Qualifying individuals only have to sign up and provide financial support, and they have no further obligations to remain in YLS. The program is truly what you make of it.
The "step-up" program was established to provide a broader group of donors the opportunity to participate. Those currently not giving $1,000 to United Way may enter YLS by giving $250 their first year of membership with a commitment to step-up to $1,000 by the fourth year of their membership. The suggested step-up schedule is $250 the first year, $500 in year two, $750 by year three and $1,000 in year four. YLS members who participate in the step-up program will be recognized as Palmetto Society members in year one.
